DJM DB3004-3 1965-1979 Ford F100 / F150 Front 3" Drop I Beams
Years ago, when DJM designed their first beams, they looked for three basic factors. Accuracy, repeatability and unsurpassed strength. The first accuracy, every beam must be in tolerace or forget about alignment and handling. Others were fabricating I-beams, not the best choice. I-beams are inheritly inaccurate. Welding long pieces together to form an I-beam would cause the part to distort. Stitch welding, a process of short welds, only lessened the distortion. Accuracy was lost and forget repeatability. No two parts were the same. Another choice was a boxed beam. This method was better but the cost to produce such a part would made it way too expensive and did not add anything to the strength. Another alternative was needed.
One of our engineers was watching a program one weekend on NASCAR racing. Showing some details on how race car frames were built. They were using Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) tubing, the same material used in DJM's control arms. The idea of the Dream Beam was born. Using tubing would give plenty strength, and decreasing the diameter of the tubes would create steps where it could be welded together to form a strong, accurate part. Now a beam could be built that is extremely accurate, repeatable and strong.
King Pins are no longer included with these I-beams.
